Italian Hero Sub Sandwich is a copycat recipe of the popular Subway foot long that makes a delicious and easy lunch for a crowd!
Italian Hero Sub Sandwich
The Subway Italian Hero was one of my all-time favorite sandwiches when I was working close to the restaurant. It is layered with amazing flavor from the variety of spicy Italian meats. Sadly I no longer am close to a Subway, so I recreated this Italian Hero Sub Sandwich for a copycat recipe to make at home, that is even better than the original with homemade freshness!
How to Make Sub Sandwiches
Grab some fresh hoagie rolls from the deli at the grocery store along with some provolone cheese and your favorite vegetables. I found this gourmet deli selection of Italian meats at Aldi which has the perfect combination of meats to recreate the the Italian Hero Sub Sandwich.
I love that all of the meats come in one package, so you save money by not having to buy multiple packages. This was enough for 3 sub sandwiches, so if you are making dinner for a crowd, just grab a couple.
Just like when you are at Subway, you can top your sandwiches with whatever vegetables and dressings you prefer. Subway suggests that you dress the sandwich with olive oil and red wine vinegar, but I opted for light mayonnaise and Dijon mustard.
How do you make a healthy sub sandwich?
By opting for whole grain wheat bread, you can increase the fiber in your sub sandwich and make it healthier. Choosing lighter options like a red wine vinaigrette and lean sandwich meats, you will also cut down on the fats.
When you make these ahead of time, leave off any dressing until they are served so they transport well. They will hold best that way and not get soggy. I also wrapped each sub sandwich up in cellophane wrap to keep it as fresh as possible. I had half a leftover sub the next day and it was still amazing!
What is the best sub sandwich?
My favorite sub sandwiches for a convenient lunch come from Subway. If you are looking to grab a quick lunch they are a great option with lots of bread, meat and sauce options. When it comes to a homemade meal, a good homemade sub sandwich beats any of the restaurant options in my eyes. The chewy bread and high quality meats are a step above the rest!
What is the difference between a sub and a sandwich?
Sub sandwiches are a sandwich made with a long roll of bread cut width wise, reminiscent of a submarine, it’s namesake. They are piled high with a variety of meats, cheeses, vegetables, and dressings.
When you are making a picnic, these Italian Hero Sub Sandwiches are the perfect lunch recipe. The meats add so much spice and flavor, which is perfect for adults who need a quick and easy portable lunch. They are perfect when you don’t want a boring old ham and cheese sandwich. Give this delicious sub sandwich a try!
