These Pinwheel toppers are a great way to add some fun to cupcakes or muffins for any occasion! My typical go-to topper for cupcakes or muffins are these scalloped Cupcake Toppers, but I have used them so often lately, that I wanted to try something new. These pinwheels were the perfect addition to my sister’s shabby chic bridal shower.
Not only are they great for a shower or birthday, but you can easily change up the colors for any holiday. Red, white & blue would be perfect for the 4th of July!
Don’t be afraid of color and pattern with your papers. The bolder choices often end up creating the most beautiful results.
Pinwheel Cupcake & Muffin Toppers – Tutorial
Makes 2 dozen
Supplies:
6-8 sheets of paper in different patterns (8″x8″ or larger will suffice)
Glue stick
24 lollipop sticks
24 assorted buttons
Hot glue gun
Scissors
Start by cutting 48 square 2.5″x2.5″ pieces from your paper. Pair up the pieces in coordinating patterns and glue them back to back using your glue stick. Trim any edges that don’t line up exactly. (NOTE: It is easier to fold the pinwheels if you begin the following process immediately after gluing. The paper is more pliable at this point and will harden within 5-10 minutes. It is best to make them one at a time.)
Using your scissors, cut slits from each corner to the center, stopping just 1/4 inch short of the center. You can free hand this, as it is not overly important to be exact. Once you begin folding the corners, it will hide any minor errors.
You will now have a square with slits making 4 triangles, almost cut out. Take the right corner of each triangle and fold the point over to the center of the square and glue down with a dot of hot glue. Continue the process clockwise until all the corners are glued down.
Take one coordinating button and glue in the center of the pinwheel. Turn the pinwheel over and on the back side place one small dot of hot glue to attach the end of the lollipop stick.
Your first pinwheel is now complete! Continue on until you have completed all of your beautiful mix and match pinwheels.
