Hamburger Hotdish
Did you grow up on casseroles and hotdish recipes? I know our family sure did living in the country! Over the years I have steered somewhat clear of the comfort food, but over time I find myself craving them every now and again. As an adult I typically like to lighten them up, like this Light Turkey Noodle Casserole or Light Cheesy Chicken Sausage & Rice Casserole.
Sometimes you are just craving something hearty and comforting from your childhood and that is when a dinner like Baked Meatballs or Cheesy Sour Cream Hamburger Hotdish sounds like perfection!
Hotdish Recipes
If you are looking for balance but still want to give this hearty casserole a try, you could certainly pair it with a salad like this Apple Slaw Salad or some veggies like Roasted Caesar Asparagus. Everything in moderation is my motto!
This hamburger hotdish recipe certainly isn’t lacking in the richness department though. Ground beef is mixed with sour cream and cream cheese along with some veggies and egg noodles. It is topped with cheese for a deliciously rich dish the whole family will love!

I won’t judge you for passing up on this delicious hot dish if it doesn’t fit in your diet, but I promise you are missing out! Save this recipe for a cheat day and all will be right.
This hotdish brings back memories of childhood. Growing up on the farm my mother made hotdish every other night. Alternated with pot roast of course and an occasional lasagna if we were really lucky.
How to make Hamburger Hotdish
To make this simple hotdish, get started by sautéing the hamburger in a large skillet over medium-high heat while breaking it up with a meat chopper. Add the onion, sweet bell pepper, garlic and salt and cook for 5 minutes until the hamburger is cooked through. Stir the pasta sauce into the meat.
In a separate bowl, microwave the cream cheese until softened. Mix the cream cheese, sour cream, Parmesan and cooked egg noodles in a greased 9×13 pan. Mix in the hamburger mixture, just until combined.
Top the hot dish with the shredded cheddar and Italian seasoning. Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes, or until the hotdish is heated through. Serve up with some garlic butter swim biscuits for a hearty and comforting meal.
Midwest Comfort Food
This meal is perfect for a rainy day, or perhaps just a rough Monday. I know when the weather gets cold and gloomy like it is right now in the Midwest, I crave classic comfort foods to warm my body and soul.
This hot dish is sure to warm you up from the inside out and then put you into a nice cozy food coma! Best of all, the leftovers taste just as good the next day.

Can you substitute any other type of noodle say rotini for the egg noodles?
Danielle Green says
egg noodles cook faster than other traditional pasta shapes, so I wouldn’t recommend swapping.
Cathy says
I made it with rotini and it was great!
Michelle Jones says
I was looking online for recipes last night and found this one. It sounded great! I made it tonight and it was a hit with my toddler. I’ll definitely keep it on the list of “likes” and make it again!
Cindy says
Does this freeze well?
Danielle Green says
Honestly it isn’t going to freeze the best with the creamy ingredients. They can possibly separate when re-heating.
Sherry Uptmore says
is the parmesan shredded or powder
Danielle Green says
Grated Parmesan (powder)
Lura Thompson says
This is so easy and delicious! I used large shell pasta and it worked very well! This makes a quick and delicious hearty dinner. Served with a salad, and enjoyed by my family!

Made this last night for the family and it was a hit with all of them (which never happens). I used a jar of Ragu, chipotle salt & truffle salt, added some Italian seasoning, a bag of frozen corn, red pepper flakes and used a parmesan/ motzarella blend (along with the cheddar)…. the kids begged for leftovers tonight and the husband asked me to make it “every other week”…. I’m not one to leave reviews for anything but I just had to for this one.

Those hotdish recipes and pictures made me hungry. You can’t beat a great old fashioned hotdish AND the good part is you usually have left overs.

Elsa says
My kids don’t like tomato base sauce. How to make it into white sauce? I think it will still taste yummy. I can still use sour cream, parmesan and cream cheese. Can i just add cooking cream?
Danielle Green says
You could add a cup of cream instead of the tomato sauce, but it will be VERY rich!
Julie says
Is. The garlic dried, fresh, or the stuuf in the jar?
Danielle Green says
I almost always use the stuff in the jar!
Olivia says
Do i boil the noodles
Danielle Green says
Yes, the noodles should be boiled!
Marla says
Can I omit the cream cheese? I’ve never liked it.
Danielle Green says
You should be able to omit it, it will just change the flavor and creaminess some.

What kind of pasta sauce do I use for the cheesy sour cream hamburger hot dish recipe
Danielle Green says
Any marinara store-bought sauce.
Jamie says
I made this for dinner tonight and it tasted great! I made a few slight changes since I’m a vegetarian. I cooked up the meat and only added a little of the pasta sauce. I then mixed the cream cheese, sour cream, and remaining pasta sauce in a large bowl. I made two dishes. One with the meant and one without. Evenly poured the sauce mixture over the noodles in each. I added a handful of cheese in with the pasta before storing as well as on top. This was super delicious paired with garlic bread (since I didn’t have meat) but my significant other said his tasted like cheeseburger almost. Either way definitely a make again meal!
Danielle Green says
Happy to hear you were able to make it work both ways Jamie!!!
Misti says
Super easy recipe to make and perfect for a busy night but unfortunately my family didn’t care for it. They are extremely picky though.
Brandi says

Yup, just a jar of spaghetti or marinara sauce!
